Serving the people in the parish of Eckington

Your Parish Councillors

Eckington Parish is in the District of North East Derbyshire, and lies South East of Sheffield and North East of Chesterfield. The Parish consists of the villages of Eckington, Marsh Lane, Ridgeway, Troway, Renishaw and Spinkhill and contains about 5,000 households. The Parish Council consists of seventeen Councillors and holds regular Council Meetings which are open to the public. Eckington Civic Centre is used for Parish Council business and is available for hire.

The name Eckington is of Saxon origin, and it appears in the Domesday Survey as Echintune. The area became more developed from the mediaeval period with the exploitation of local iron and coal deposits and the growth of the manufacture of edge-tools, particularly scythes and sickles, and iron nails. Coal mining and associated industry continued well into the 20th Century and it was at the George pub in Eckington that the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Miners Association (an early Trades Union) was founded in 1865.

Eckington Parish is in a beautiful setting of undulating agricultural land together with extensive well-established woodland. Eckington woods are justly famed for their spring flowers, in particular bluebells.

Eckington is a commercial centre with a number of shops, a bank, Post Office, Business Centre, Library, Civic Centre, Leisure Centre and the Church of St Peter and St Paul. There is a weekly market on a Friday run by the Parish Council.

I can't say that I was born and raised in Eckington, but I can say that I moved here by choice in 2003, and stayed here ever since, because its such a great place.

My background is as a mathematician and software engineer, and I have been a Director at several software businesses, including a stint in Seattle. These days I run my own business selling, of all things, anti-snoring devices :-)

A few years ago I realised Eckington was getting left behind in several ways, and that we needed strong voices to fight our corner. So began my journey into local politics...

I am committed to improving residents lives in Eckington and ensuring our town thrives and is a place where everyone wants to live and bring up their kids.

Cllr Kane Deffley

I was born in 1993 and raised in Eckington, living in Marsh Lane for a few years too.

I was educated here in Eckington before going on to study history at the University of Lincoln, and completing a Masters Degree in Education at Sheffield Hallam University. I've worked in both Eckington Secondary School and Eckington Junior School, and now work in Sheffield Hallam University's governance department.

I have a keen interest in education, and have used my role as councillor to help provide new learning resources for local schools. I also care deeply about the environment and can often be found walking in the local countryside. I'm also a strong believer in making sure that local authorities are giving residents the tools they need to help build a better community, change cannot come from the top down alone but, together, we can build a better parish.

Cllr Jennifer Archer

I grew up in Buckinghamshire and worked both there and in London. It was
my career that caused me to move North to Boots head office in Nottingham as
the company's Training Analyst. As my career progressed, I worked in
personnel, training and education for a broad range of companies, universities
local government and national organisations and this kept me in the North. I
have lived in Eckington with my husband for 39 years. Fortunately, both our professional careers, working in the UK and abroad, enabled us to stay here and both our children went to local Eckington schools before going to university. Some years ago, I decided to work for myself and develop my own company. Whilst I have always tried to participate and support local events and activities, my work as a health education and training specialist often required me to work away. Latterly, having decided to scale back my work activities, I was elected a parish councillor
last summer. I had always said that when any opportunity arose, I would give more time to helping the community which I have enjoyed and benefitted from and where I have made many good friends and colleagues. It has been a steep learning curve in some respects, as the parish council covers several wards which I have had to learn about. I have also needed to find out more about what the parish council does, what it has done in the past and how we can work as a team with the public to ensure our area has a positive and vibrant future.
